Today, NDA's presidential candidate has been announced and the race to Raisina Hill, an area of Lutyens' Delhi, New Delhi has started...
BJP announced the name of Ram Nath Kovind, the present Bihar governor, and an eminent lawyer and seasoned politician. BJP has scored many points by selecting his candidature, which has left opposition divided. In addition to the existing parties within NDA, other parties have also extended their support. It seems to be a calculated move keeping an eye on LS elections 2019. Now the opposition has to decide whether they want to extend their support to BJP's candidate, which seems highly unlikely. But it is not a complete loss, as it is just a step in the current politics.
If one looks back at the presidential election in 2012, BJP was even behind the present status of the Congress and opposition. BJP did not have enough numbers, but still, they kept on saying that they will open their cards only after the nomination of a candidate by the then Congress government. Lal Krishna Advaniji even went to Chennai to meet late Jaylalithaji and tried to get other smaller parties on board. But the major players like SP, BSP, and TMC were not extending support to both of the national parties. Mamata and Mulayam earlier took a press conference and announced 5 candidates as their preference. But, soon after consultation of Pranav Mukherjee with SP supremo, things changed suddenly. Bal Thackeray also extended his support and finally Pranav was declared as Congress candidate.
Meanwhile, late PA Sangma had decided to fight presidential elections much before getting support from any party. In the end, BJP had to support him, just to oppose Pranav ji; in return, late PA Sangma ji, soon after losing that election, decided to join NDA. In essence, BJP did not get many dividends by not supporting Congress candidate; rather it would have got much more dividends had they backed the Pranav Mukharjee. BJP opposed him just for the sake of opposition. Therefore, now BJP should not cry foul, if opposition fields a candidate, and now it seems they may field Meera Kumar as their candidate if she decides to fight.
